RFB (Rainforest Baskets) has been sharing the work of master Indigenous weavers since 2002. In 2012, husband-and-wife team Ed and Jen Kuyper took the reins, continuing the mission with care and a commitment to ethical sourcing. What began as a small family venture has grown into a respected collection of fine woven art, rooted in relationships and storytelling.
We work directly with artists across Panama, Colombia, Rwanda, Ghana, and beyond—bringing their baskets to collectors, designers, and those who value meaningful, lasting craft. Every piece is made by hand. Every basket carries a story. Our role is to help those stories travel.
Careful observation of in-progress baskets is a key part of our work. By documenting the ongoing efforts of master weavers, we gain the insight needed to understand what’s coming next—and prepare for it with intention.
These reviews include field notes from travel, progress updates from the artists, and detailed photographs of each basket as it takes shape. It’s a way of honoring the process, not just the finished piece—every stitch, every step, every story in the making.
Watching Roxana and her mother work side by side is a glimpse into the heart of Embera mask-making. Each stitch is placed with quiet focus, palms split and shaped by hand, and dyed fibers chosen with care.
Seeing a mask mid-construction reveals the rhythm behind the art—the way color and form slowly emerge over weeks and months. It’s not just a piece in progress, but a tradition being passed from one generation to the next, one coil at a time.
From baskets no larger than a thimble to monumental works that span three feet and take years to complete, every piece we carry is selected with care. We work closely with our trusted partners and travel often to meet with the artists themselves—sharing meals, stories, and time in the places where the baskets are made.
These trips allow us to review new work in person, observe works in progress, and thoughtfully prepare for what’s ready to come home. It’s not just about selecting art—it’s about honoring the hands that made it, and carrying that care forward to the hands that will receive it.
Lets talk about the art, the artists, the source of dyes. We LOVE answering questions about the collection.
RFB represents world-class Wounaan artists through the online gallery, in distinguished galleries in the southwest, and by appointment.
