Maricin Cheucarama Negria, Wounaan Weaver
Wounaan Weaver | Chepo, Panama
Maricin Cheucarama Negria is part of a remarkable lineage of Wounaan basket artists. She lives in Chepo, just outside Panama City, alongside her mother, Cristina Negria, and near her aunts Miriam and Dalia—the three well-known Negria sisters, each respected for their artistry and influence. Maricin learned to weave from them, incorporating delicate ribbed bird motifs and small-leafed designs that have become a family signature.
Originally from a remote village in the Darién, Maricin’s family moved to Chepo about ten years ago to access better education. In their home village, school ended after sixth grade. Through weaving income, the Negria sisters made it possible for their children to attend high school—and even university. Maricin has since completed her secondary studies and begun attending university, with dreams of becoming a businesswoman. While her future may lead her away from weaving, her baskets remain rare and deeply meaningful—each one a stepping stone in her pursuit of something more.
