About Deyci Cabezon
Wounaan Weaver | Maje, Darién, Panama
Born in 1982 in the village of Maje, Deyci Cabezon has spent her life rooted in the rhythms of the Darién rainforest. Her parents migrated from Colombia—part of the wider Wounaan diaspora that spans both countries—and raised their eight children in the heart of the forest. Deyci was married young and now has four children of her own, the oldest already a teenager.
Like many in her community, she completed school through sixth grade, the highest level available in the village. While some move closer to the city in search of further education, Deyci has chosen to stay—close to nature, tradition, and family. She began weaving at ten, learning by observation and practice alongside three of her sisters. Her father continues to support her work by gathering palm fronds from the forest, which she prepares and dyes herself. Deyci’s favorite designs remain geometric, especially in classic black and white—woven with care, focus, and quiet strength.
